How we handle wastewater treatment
Water is important to us because the food we produce must be safe for our consumers. But, how we manage our water is important for far greater reasons.
We do our best to conserve water by always working on smarter ways to use it in our food production. And because we believe in transparency in our practices, we report our chemical data to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as required by the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) program. We also report water usage as part of our sustainability report since 2005 and we recently set a goal to reduce the water we use in our production process by 12 percent by 2020.
What we do with wastewater treatment
By putting more emphasis on wastewater treatment, we’re taking the necessary actions to be leaders in water sustainability. Our procedures are regulated by EPA programs, like the Clean Water Act National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits that prohibits the release of water that may contain chemicals. The water that’s released meets the EPA’s Effluent Guidelines Program and is safe for the environment. We also report the amount of nitrate compounded included in our wastewater for the EPA’s annual TRI along with other chemicals.
As we continue to grow and evolve our company, we’ll continue to strive for and innovate better solutions to help protect this vital natural resource.
